This evening I tried in vain to get to Margaret Island, the island in the middle of the Danube. When I had walked past the entry bridge off the bridge from Buda to Pest earlier this afternoon I had noticed police blocking the entrance but I walked across anyway to see if they had gone. Unfortunately they hadn't. Two police were sitting on the kerb, behind barriers warning of the closure. I stood on the bridge for a while, watching a duck struggling to swim against the fast flowing river. It was then I noticed how freckly the sun had made my arms.
Person after person, cyclist after cyclist arrived at the entry to the island only to be turned away. After watching the duck for a while longer, I headed back down the bridge, past two couples sitting on the banks of the river, one snogging and one having a picnic, past a topless man eating an ice cream and into a little square at the end of the bridge. I sat on the banks of the river and watched the sunset over Margaret Island.
I've had a really lovely day in Budapest. The rest of the trip has high standards to match. Tomorrow, more sight seeing, although this time I might get the bus.
The Budapest Tourist Guide website says:
ReplyDelete"Important: Due to the Flood on the Danube that is expected to reach its maximum level on Monday transportation to and from Margaret Island is closed off.
Guests of the two large hotels have been moved to other hotels in Budapest."
Although this is probably referring to Monday two weeks back, it seems that water did overflow the island and that is probably why it is closed.
